The Mid-Autumn Festival event, hosted by OrFA Vietnam, in October 2016, was memorable, not only for OrFA as an organization, but also for the 3 orphanages, totaling over 160 children, we had to the honor to host. Like most children at orphanages in Vietnam, these children were either abandoned at birth, given up by poor families with no means to support them, or lost their parents due to natural disasters or disease at a young age. Life at the orphanage is tough enough without the extra stress of having enough funds for food and education. To give these children some laughter and hope during the holiday season, as well as raise awareness for OrFA’s mission in Vietnam, OrFA decided to host the Mid-Autumn Festival event in 3 central locations in Vietnam: Dieu Giac Charitable House in partnership with Misfit company in the Ho Chi Minh City area, Social Support Centers No.3 in Hanoi, and Duc Son Pagoda in Hue.

OrFA’s Mid-Autumn event included two main activities for the children: “I draw my dream” and Full Moon festival Vietnamese traditional games. “I draw my dream” allowed the children to draw their wishes and dreams with the help of OrFA’s volunteers. The “I draw my dream” activity drew out the children’s creativity, honed their drawing skills, and also helped them discover hidden artistic talents. Additionally, their drawings gave us a glimpse of who they hoped to become. We hope, through OrFA support, they can realize these dreams one step at a time. Afterwards, Vietnamese traditional games were prepared by OrFA volunteers, along with musical performances from guests/volunteers, dances, and the traditional Lion Dance. These fun activities were followed by a warm dinner, provided by OrFA, in the company of volunteers, children, and staff.

OrFA’s long term goals include fostering the development and the success of these children, by providing them the resources to access a quality education. We hope that activities such as the Full Moon festival event will generate continual awareness among OrFA supporters for the necessary care the children at these orphanages so greatly need.

OrFA would like to thank all our volunteers in Vietnam. We are very fortunate to have a group of volunteers who are not only kind, but also passionate and dedicated to the OrFA’s cause, and work hard to make any contribution they can for these children. Let’s continue this great work, and bring forth our passion to empower children not only in Vietnam, but Southeast Asia, by giving them a better education to build toward a better future.
